What little we had is melting fast, with temps like 40 yesterday, just checked this morning, it is 30. This is going to hurt business up and down the shore. In 2006 we had a brown Christmas.

I went Christmas shopping today. I made my way through one store and then gave up and went home. No snow means it felt like just any other shopping trip and that was no fun. :-(

didn't Dr. Griesy have his office there for awhile? I know he was at the clinic for a time, but for some reason Dr. office comes to mind.

Dr. Greisy's office was in the back in the 70's. Denny Moen opened his restaurant (where Dunnigans is now) in the spring of 1976. Denny's chef (who used to post here long ago) and I were his first busboys and dishwashers. Great place for a 16 year old kid to work with the older teenage waitresses he had working there. And an early Happy Festivus, Flakes. I won't be around a computer on the actual day.

And a Happy Festivus too you Lloyd.

I meant; What was there back in the 50's and 60's. As a kid I never ventured into that area.

I thought Pamida was supposed to be selling everything off, big sales. Well, so far nothing has changed as far as sales are! Same things on sale as always.

finally they put the shopper in with the Chronicle. Well, when we get our Chronicle in the mail it has been delivered at the same time anyway. Much better than having the shopper thrown in yards.

I see by the chronicle that finally they are moving along with Pamida to Shopko. They said the liquidation sale starts Sunday until first week in July and they will close for a month for the remodel, change over. I know all the help has to reapply.

I was surprised to read that the store would actually be shutting down, but guess it is easier to redo a store without people traffic.

Maybe they are going to move the entrance further North so it is more handy to the whole parking lot. Seems the way it is now was to make it handy to Super One.

Wonder if the street sweeper is broken as haven't seen it out sweeping all that sand from the winter off the streets yet. Really noticed it(sand) the other day down on 1st Ave, as well as other streets. Even though we have had rain, it hasn't seemed to wash it away.

I will agree that people should pay more attention to what the school board is doing, but what is it this time, that warrants special notice here? Am earnestly curious.

Received the card from Lake Connections the other day about authorizing them to install cable to the house. We already have three different ones coming in, and going under ground, not sure about that. I know to have it installed to the house is free, but I sure wish they had some projected costs to the services they offer.

I even called them and the gal didn't know anything. I would think if they want people to connect with them, they would have better info than what they have. Just my opinion. (My post didn't show up before, so was surprised when I got a response. The only way it showed up now was clicking on the link in the notification I got in my mailbox!) Crazy!

Well it is now about 3:30 on the 23rd and I have looked at the website. It must be coming up a bit at a time, even as I write this. The FAQ has a lot of info on just when things will happen and what services are to be offered. There is a tentative schedule of completion, with a map showing just what areas get hooked up first, and so on.

The home page is quite plain, with not much going on, but there are a few pull-down menus with a lot of info on them.

There is quite a bit of info now, but no real specifics on just exactly how much ot will cost. Says it will be competitive with what is offered by other providers now. By golly it has to be better than Frontiernet. I'm paying a hundred a month for phone and DSL internet and the DSL ain't all that fast, especially considering that I am just a few short blocks from the relay shed (a key factor in available speed, apparently)Maybe about 3-3.5 mbps down and about 250-300kbps up, if memory serves.
Bring it on!

There site looks the same as it did this morning. I pay the same for Frontier now Tom after my 2 yr. contract ran out and I put long distance on my phone, and I think it is a lot of money. Frontier internet goes down often, and sometimes it is so slow pulling up pages. Sometimes I can't get into my e-mail even. So they get called often!!!

Now this is News in my book:

Four times the pomp: Quadruplets graduate from Two Harbors High School
By: Sonja Peterson, Lake County News Chronicle

For Brad, Cole, Lee and Lacey Myrdal, graduation from high school Friday night was particularly bittersweet.

The quadruplets, who attended North Shore Community School and Two Harbors High School, now will be splitting up for the first time.

It was sure nice to see a nice story like this on the front page. The reporter, Sonja Peterson is a THHS grad of a couple of years ago. She is in college and working for the Chronicle over the summer. Pretty cool for her to score a front page story too!

noticed in today's Duluth paper, online edition (June 6) that filing for State senate District 3 is Tom Bakk, DFL and Jennifer Havlick, DFL. I am assuming this is a misprint. I believe that Ms. Havlick has campaigned in the past as a Republican candidate. Is this a misprint?

An effort is being made to start up a local, low-power FM radio station in Two Harbors. This would be a non-profit local station with local folks doing everything associated with the station, including being on-air. This station would have a reach of about 3 to 10 miles, depending on the terrain where you are.

A survey is being conducted to find out what your inerests might be. No tax maoney would be used to set this up and run it. Donations and volunteers will fuel this operation, with maybe one low-paid full-time person to herd cats and keep things in line.

go here for the survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/twoharborsradiosurvey

There is a facebook page, under the name of Two Harbors Community Radio. The page is fairly new and does not have a lot of content right now, but it is a place to start.

The station is still in the very early stages, sketching in the first lines that help define the picture.

Paperwork for establishing a non-profit organization, finding potential donors in other foundations, finding a likely antenna site, working out ideas for a possible studio site, staffing and programming are all things that want to be figured out - all seemingly at the same time.

There is not enough "traffic" here to justify a separate thread, probably. If activity here picks up on this project, the admin may decide to start up a separate thread. It will be his call, but there will have to be more activity to make it worthwhile, I think.

I've been fed up with Frontier. I had DSL service in town and very close to the relay shack, so my DSL speed should be as good as it gets for residential service. pfui! It was about 3.5 mbs download speed and about 250 kbps upload speed. I had to reboot the modem a couple of times during a session, and at busy times of the day, speeds would c-r-a-w-l. One day a Mediacom man came knocking at my door. I have no use for cable tv, but he said I could get phone and internet, with no tv. He had my full attention.

I now have residential phone, with my old phone number, plus full free long distance. I also have broadband internet, with aboout 20 mbps download speed and about 3 mbps upload speed. And, It is costing less than Frontier. Even after the introductory price wears off it will still be cheaper than Frontier.

I cancelled my Frontier service.

A short time later - right about regular billing time...I got my bill - for over 800 flippin' dollars!!! Was I mad? No, mad is not an adequate word for my condition. As this is a high-class family oriented board I will allow you to fill in whatever you like to describe how mad I was. I called Frontier. After getting through the answering bots, I got a human with no accent. She said, "didn't you know that you have an automatic annual renewal on your contract? I'm wondering what the hell? I don't know anything about any automatic annual renewal. No, I said. I don't know a thing about that. Never heard of it before. I pay $108 dollars a month for my service and that is the full price, no intro deals or special prices. She's mumbling and I'm thundering and finally she says something about requesting a cancelling of the early cancellation penaltiies for me. I should hope so! I'll pay the usual 108 bux, but I'm not about to pay $800 in early cancellation penalties!!!
We will have to wait for the next billing period to see what happens in this story.

The more I thought about it, the madder I got. With an annual automatic renewal, there is no way to avoid an early canellation penalty. If you cancel the day before the renewal date, it is an early cancellation. If you cancel 10 minutes after the renewal, it is just a few minutes shy of a full year early cancellation. And who knows when that renewal date is? Fer pete's sake I have had this phone number for over 40 years, and internet service for as long as internet service has been available. I don't know what flamin' day it was!!

Well, dammitall, I hope every person in town cancels Frontier and goes with Mediacom for thier phone service, until our fiber network lights up.

I only signed a 2 year contract with Mediacom, and have my contract, so I know the particulars.

I'm still mad. Frontier. feh!

If you do cancel, ask upfront about early cancellation penalties, first.

Tom, I feel your pain. Starting about a year ago, I noticed that my internet speed was getting slower and slower. I did a few speed tests to measure what the actual speed was. It was starting to drop below 1.0 meg. Normally, it would be about 2.0 meg. One night, I could not do anything. I measured the speed and it was .025 meg. I have had dial up faster than that. I would call the service department and complain, and they would give me the excuse, "Well they are upgrading the service". Even had a tech come and swap the modem, but to no avail. I finally told them, they had one month to get this speed back to a respectable rate. Nothing happened, so I pulled the plug. Unfortunately, for me, there are not too many options out here in the hinterlands, but I was able to get the wireless service from CLP. Price wise, it is fair, and the speed runs about 6-7 meg, which is well beyond what Frontier could offer. I cancelled my telephone from Frontier also, which saves me $50 per month, just use our cell phones. The CLP service is month to month, so as soon as fiber gets here I can switch without penalty.

It's almost as if Frontier wants to lose all their customers, so they no longer have to have a presence in the area.

They other thing I found a bit odd, was the fact that when I called to disconnect, noone made any special attempts to keep me as a customer with special deals or pricing. Maybe they were glad to see me go. I know I am.

After I cancelled Frontier, I got a notice that I was going to have to pay a Early Termination Fee of nearly $800. Failure to do so would result in an outside collection agency taking my case, and also a degradation of my credit rating.

I did not react kindly to this shakedown, and consulted the internet. It turns out that the Attorney General in the state of New York forced Frontier to return tens of millions of dollars in ETFs for the concept of an automatically renewed annual contract.

I contacted the Attorney General's office here in Minnesota and told my tale. I said I wanted Frontier to not levy an ETF in the amount I mentioned. I thought such a thing as an automatically renewed one year contract was not a reasonable thing - and I was totally unaware of such a thing in the first place.

I got a response from the AG in about a week or so, telling me that the AG contacted Frontier about this matter and was expecting Frontier to reply directly to the AG's office within 10 days.

Recently I got a refund check from Frontier in the amount of about $78. I am now assuming that Frontier is not going to try to collect an ETF from me. I cashed that check as quickly as i could! haha!

Depending on your own circumstances, I think it is entirely possible that you can cancel your Frontier services pretty much whenever you want, but I would look around for any kind of contract you might have, first. If you feel the need to contact the MN AG's office about Frontier, there is a website link for a complaint form. This is a PDF form you can download for free, print it up, fill it out and send it in to the AG. If there are enough complaints against Frontier for outrageous Early Termination Fees, it is very likely the Attorney General could become very interested in what is happening in Lake County.

I cancelled them a couple months ago, and kept getting a credit statement of $18, finally last week a check came. I would have had a heart attack getting a bill like that. I know at one time I had a two year contract, but that expired, then I had a one year contract for a certain rate, and apparently that expired...I HOPE. Lots of people around here have been cancelling Frontier and that might be why they decided to try sticking it too people, never know. Sure glad it turned out for the better for you Tom.

I have a local comment. Now that America is heading into a second financial collapse much worse than 2008's, has anyone in this mining and railroad town checked what has been happening to the market for Iron Ore. Like what Two Harbors CN railroad ships and Silver Bay exists on?
Well, a rapid collapse in demand for Iron Ore, plus over production of cheap high quality Brazilian ore has already slammed big Iron Ore producers like West Australia. With a price collapse of 50% in recent months, and still headed down on a collapse in liquidity in the commodities markets, Iron Ore will sink further. Processed ore like Minnesota makes is High Cost Iron Ore, therefore the first producers to close. If market trends continue, and the US Money Printing economy falters, our state may see Iron Ore smashed! Meaning Job losses and collapse of tax revenues. Now is the time to sell, if you plan to move your house, in a year, the housing market here could be toast. Does that cheer you up?

I see the Iron Mining Industry is laying off over 1,000 up on the range.
Has anyone been following the price of Copper? All those thousands of mining jobs we have coming to Lake and St. Louis Counties? Don't get your hopes up. They are going the way of Sam Cave's Giant Condo Disney Land project of 2006-7.
As world commodity markets crash on low and no growth in world economic powers like the EU and China, our miners had better be looking behind them, as the layoff man is coming.

The iron mining industry is going through another shakeout, just as it did in the early 80s. I was off work for two years, then, while the mining companies were figuring out how to keep the mines going with no one working in them. When things cleared up, a SIGNIFICANT percentage of workers were down the road, production and train traffic resumed with outputs as high as before, but with a lot less people doing the work. Now that Australia is a player, able to crank out a lot of product, US production will likely be cut some amount that will result in some income for domestic steel companies...but it will mean another significant reduction in iron range employment in iron mining.

Copper prices tanked again today. The bubble market in Copper, caused by the great Chinese expansion, and China's copper inventory build up seem to be over. China was stockpiling copper as a store of value, a sort of poor man's gold. But most sane economists see the end of the bull market in copper. And on that note, I am wondering how our great underground copper mine is going to develop. Or better, not develop. Were I an investor in that mining company, I'de be racing to pull my money out!
Iron ore is experiencing an almost Oil like price situation. Down, down, down. Brazil has announced they will maintain full production, meaning their low cost, ultra high quality ore will stay in the market. This is an attempt to build market share at the expensive of high cost producers. That means the Minnesota Iron Range. Taconite is high cost iron ore, due to processing costs, whereas Brazil's ore come out of the ground ready to stamp into a razor blade.
Our Iron mines may see even harder times, because Australia and others are going to fight for market share, leaving us in a battle we can't win. High cost producers are in trouble. And the USA is entering a recession, perhaps an epic one. While the mines are always cyclical, we may be in a bear market that is systemic. Not good news for any of us. I know an Iron Range State Senator said one or more of their mines may never reopen, I tend to share his fears.

Where did the Chop Shop go? This was a new enterprise on 7th Street, between 5th and 6th Avenue, on the west side of 7th Street. The folks there had some very nicely done metal sculptures displayed outside to advertise their product. The two most prominent were a giant Monarch butterfly and a huge dragonfly.

The building is empty now, and for sale.

Where did the business go? It looked so promising, and the whole family was involved in the production. Wherever they are, I hope they are doing well. They made a fine looking product and did custom work, too.

I see that the City Council is using smoke and mirrors again. They plan to build a new building for the use of campers. Plan to spend, close to, $900,000. They plan on getting a $100,000 grant so we are on the hook for near $800,000. But good news; the money will be paid for by camper fees, so it will not affect the taxes on you home. Well, that is a nice thought, but where did the funds from the camp sites go for these years? I would guess they went into the general fund, so now the general fund will be short the amount of money that will repay the loan. Will the cost of running the City be cut by the amount lost every year? Likely not, so where will the lost revenue come from. I can only see it coming from increased taxes. It would probably be a minute amount, maybe 10 or $20 a year. Not much, but did we get lied to?

On another note, the Sonju building is all but gone. We will be getting a new business there, but will one of the gas stations have to shut down because of the increased competition? It will be interesting to see how things turn out.
