I read that. Wonder what is going to happen to the old place. Lot of restaurants in the area now.

Let's pause for a moment to thank our Veterans. Thank you for your service to our country, and especially to those who made the ultimate sacrifice:

Theodore Mattson, WWII

John Mattson, Korean War

Dodd Keller, Viet Nam War

You will not be forgotten-

Yes, I worked with his daughter back in 1963. For those who don't remember, his name was Albert Woolson.

Torggy,
I received this email about an upcoming event at the Knife River Rec Center. Thought you might like to share it with your local group.
Mark Wick will be sharing a presentation of old postcards of North Shore Businesses.

Hi all:I am forwarding the following information about an upcoming event that may be of interest to you.

See below a message about the upcoming Community Interest Program next Wednesday at the Rec Building.

Please forward this to others in the area including TH who you feel would enjoy the program. Our speaker is Mark Wick who spoke to us last April on North Shore excursion boats. Recently Mark got hold of about 100 postcards of north shore businesses, scenery and attractions from the 20s through the 70s. He's made a slide presentation out of them called "A postcard tour of the north shore – 1920’s - 1970". Will be a great program.

Our program this month and in March will be on a Wednesday, not the usual Thursday.

Time is 7 PM on Wed the 27th. Hope you can make it and do tell others!
Jo Thompson

I am aware that the CVHS class of 63 is having a 50 year reunion at the Earthwood Inn in Two Harbors on Friday, August 9th in the evening. Might be a good chance to stop by and say hi. They were one of the smaller graduating classes, I believe 14.

I believe that is the same weekend as the Come on home get together at the town hall. Might be a good time to visit the North Shore.

Thanks for the heads up Bigguy. Enjoy you visit.

I would say the Coming Home Party at the Town Hall was a success. Looked like approximately 125 people were in attendance. It looked like the Class of '63 enjoyed themselves very much. A big thank you to the organizers of the party! It's obviously an event that everyone looks forward to.

It was beautiful, now today cooler, and it is raining out there now. WE had two very beautiful warm days in a row, not sure how that happened! I do mean WARM days!!!
Still bothers me too see the school sitting like this, I wish they would tear it totally down. There is still a road off to the right, tire tracks going in there, but more a trail now than a road like before. They were doing something back there a few years back.

Looking for help. This is also posted on the Clover Vally Face book page. A preliminary All Class Reunion committee meeting will be held at the Clearwater Grille (Lakeview Castle) on Tuesday, January 21, at 6:30 p.m. During this meeting we hope to select at least three potential sites to hold the reunion at, and narrow down the proposed date(s) to three.

If you are interested in attending, please meet us in the bar at Clearwater. So far, Doug Dalager and Janet Johansen will be in attendance for sure. Betty Carlson has also shown an interest, so we hope that she will be there as well. Anyone who graduated from CVHS is welcome to attend the meeting, especially those of you who attended pre-1970.

We look forward to seeing you there next Tuesday night at 6:30 pm.

Hello out there Cyber Valley.

It has been a while since posting anything on this site. 43 years since anyone has experienced their first day of school at old 92. So many of our other schools that we play football, basketball, baseball and track in are mostly gone. Albrook, T-M, Cotton, Cook, and Orr have closed and merged to make new schools. Only Cherry is out there along with Floodwood and few others. So many areas have changed like our beloved Clover Valley. People still live and work out there. I still in enjoy my fall activities of hunting and wheeling in the woods. I gone back and read some of the first post when this site was new. That has been over ten years now. Just saying greetings to everyone out there.

Nice to hear from you Max. Hope it is a nice fall for being in the north woods.

It does appear that the county is going to demolish what is left of the old school. Kinda sad but good all at the same time. Might be nice to move the "school 92" marker down to the town hall.marker

I'm not from Clover Valley and never went to school there, but I can understand an attachment to a school, as I was attached to mine. The demolition of your school will be the final tolling of the bell and the end of something dear to you all. I do think it will be important to move the school marker to the town hall as part of a monument or memorial of what once was. You have my earnest sympathies.

Okay guys this Saturday October 15th at 2:30 at the Clearwater grill there are going to be some people who are putting together a free tv access video about the old school. Hopefully some former CV'ers can show up to give them some input. And no you don't have to be on video. Would just like a group to exchange some memories of the old school. Hope to see you there.

His is related to Carol Sorvik? Just read on the internet he was from Bloomington so more than likely not.

Mystery house in section 31 in the upper part of the township about 5 miles from the Lake. Picture was in a Geological report from 1948. I stopped and visited the current owners yesterday. Where is it and who's house do you think it was in the 1940's. If you can figure it out I'll post the plat map that goes with it. dmp Mystery House

Looks like Ken and Helen Hendrickson's house on the Ryan Road, just below the Paul Road. This could have been taken from the old church (currently Ed Englesen's place). Just a guess and probably wrong!

Torggy and Big Guy,
You are close Big Guy. I also was sure it was the Hendrickson place and took the picture to Helen. During a couple hours of coffee and Danish, Helen showed me on the picture a half dozen reasons that it wasn't her place. I wasn't totally convinced but giving her the befit of a doubt, I drove around for a bit when I left and I found it. Unlike in the picture, the trees are now big and you can no longer see the house from the road. On first look one may think that the BOMARC water tower is on the horizon but that is still 30 years into the future. That item may be a martin birdhouse in the yard of the home. Here's a hint: The picture is not taken from a road but there is a road in the picture that is hard to see. Any other thoughts or others who want to take a guess? DMP

Gotta be worse ways to spend some time than with Helen's Danish. LOL She does have a lot of local knowledge.

Sure was a good guess by the Bigguy. I thought it more looked like a place up by the old high school.

Lester E. Leikas: 76, Duluth, died April 11, 2017 at St. Mary's Essentia in Duluth after a brief illness.
He was born in Duluth on April 14, 1940 to Enol and Helme Leikas.
In the late 1940s Lester and his family lived in the Clover Valley community off the Homestead Rd. He attended Bloomingdale school where he made many friends in Mrs Madelin's 3rd grade class in 1948. More than a few people in Duluth Township remember Lester’s cheerfulness.
After moving he attended Duluth Central High School and then served in the National Guard.
Lester's outgoing personality, smile, and goodnatured demeanor were cherished by all who knew him. In his earlier years, Lester grew up logging with his parents in the Brimson area.
Lester also lived with the Michael Ojard family in Knife River for a time around 1959 where he and his guitar enthralled the hearts of many a young girl. He drove truck for Hugos logging and Ulland Brothers, Inc. among others. He loved children and would tell stories of taking "big bunches of kids" for rides in the bed of his truck, including those of his friend, Ollie Hill. Lester was an accomplished musician. He traveled the region playing with the Tumbleweeds country music band, bringing joy to many.
In later years living at Bayshore, Lester kept all up on the current weather and news, always complimented the cooks, and: ”filled our hearts and homes with smiles and laughter”. He will be remembered and missed by staff, residents and families from Bayshore Residence and Rehabilitation Center, where he lived for over 20 years Also he is carried in the hearts of longtime friends Ollie Hill, Ken Hanson, Michael Ojard, their families and many others.
Photos and stories of Les for the Duluth Township history records would be appreciated.

As a kid back in the 49- 50's I lived on the Paul Road, which it wasn't called back then and also up a ways on the McQuade Road. I do not recall seeing this house though, and we had to drive by it any time we drove from the McQuade Road over to my grandma's ,or when I took the bus to Bloomingdale. Darn I wish I could remember this house, but it just doesn't come into my memory. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Blondie, After turning east on the Paul Rd turn right in the second driveway after the county pit on the SE corner of the Paul and McQuade intersection. It probably used to be the first driveway. The view of the house would have been from the hill in the pit. Helen's house is a small white spot in the far distance. The Paul (Anderson) rd would be along the treeline on the left. dmp

I remember the pit. I think the angle this picture was taken is not the view/angle I saw from the road, that is why I do not recognize it.

I believe that would be Charlie Anderson's house. Walter Johnson's (bus driver) gravel pit adjoined it. I believe Walter purchased the property from Charlie Anderson. I'm going to ask Ray J.

I think you are right about the name bigguy, that rings a bell. I lived on the same side as Hollindays, but they didn't live there at that time. Obergs old log cabin is where I lived, and Don and Millie Oberg tore it down eventually and built a home. Just down the way on the other side of the road lived Morris and Sadie Oberg, whom we rented the cabin from.

Blondie,
My id picture was taken at Bloomingdale about 1947. That year I went to a Halloween party that I think was at the old Oberg house that you lived in. I remember bobbing for apples, being made to feel welcome and having a good time. I'd love to see a picture of the old house. dmp

Blondie,
Thanks for the photo. Just think of the stories and lives that were shaped behind those walls. I'll be adding the picture to my township archives. Any notes on the history of the cabin would also be appreciated. Also, while I'm on that thought, I'd like more info on Charlie Anderson if possible.
Sorry for the late reply, I was spending some time with grandchildren in Bismarck, ND.

Maxx, Perhaps you can help with this. I was wondering what became of the Thompson Family after they left the Wonderland. I remember Vern and Alvie and baby Pamela in the 1950s. If I remember right, Vern's uncles, Tom and Martin had the cabins across from the Wonderland.

Hey DMP,

Thompsons stayed in the area one more year after selling the Wonderland. They moved to Fla. They also had a son who was my age and his name is Jeff. I know Vern and Alvie came up a for a few years. I never knew Martin but Tom still own the cabins across the highway. I forget when Tom passed away.

How do we start a new thread? I like the previous ones based on season and year. "Summer 2018" would be a good start. I think Obits would still work good in the Passing On column.
OK? How? dmp

Norsky, The forum quit working for me after our last correspondence almost a year ago. Blonde just told me that it is working now. I'm still interested in the photos. I recently scanned and digitized a couple hundred that were stored at the town hall after the Roots book was done. I have plans on making a local photo album. On photos: any labeling of WHERE-WHEN-WHO helps a lot. Labeling on the front is best. High resolution is good also but sometimes not possible. I'll get back on in a couple days with some memories and maybe my sister will tune in and share also. I'll start recommending the forum at Homesteaders.
Do I need to do anything special for you to get my email address or is filling it in below my password enough?

Looking forward to seeing both of you. Bring lots of pre-labeled photos for me to scan for the archives and to add to profiles in the LAKE SUPERIOR NORTH SHORE FAMILIES online tree. On that note: If someone will loan me a 1959 yearbook I'll scan it so it can be on the big screen in the Community Room at the come-On-Home. I'll also see if I can get the digitized the yearbook on-line at the township website.

Also, a reunion list of names would help me profile their families in the LSNSF tree. If I get them into the tree they also can be on the screen at the Come-On-Home. If you are having a reunion meeting someplace that has a big screen, I could have the digitized year book and LSNSF tree on the screen there (maybe, no promise yet. It takes a fair amount of prep time and I would need to start now.)

I don't want to organize reunions but I could be a data base for them. Class lists in EXCEL would be a good start.

To give credit where credit is due: Blonde has been giving terrific help to my sister Donna and I in editing and correcting the LSNSF tree. Anyone who wants access to the tree should send me their email address and we'll have ANCESTRY send them an invite. It has over 5000 profiles now,(mostly Duluth Township and Knife River) and growing. The tree is seen world-wide and recently help a Duluth Township Family reunite with relatives in Sweden after no contact in about 40 years.
