Thanks bigguy.
I'm curious about the protocol for posting obituaries. Is there a copyright problem or such with posting the original obit and or photo? The published obits tend to be unavailable from the Forum eventually. I have done a couple where I paraphrased the original obit and added some personal memories and once in a while I have a different photo to post.
Also; What is the best way to reply to a very old post from the archives so it becomes current?

You best ask Torggy about the guidelines, as there was a problem with some at one time. I just noticed yesterday that obits from past have disappeared, that is too bad. If that is the case there isn't much sense I guess in posting an obit link.

When posting anything from another source try to post the first few lines then the web address.

Just post on any topic you want and then that topic will be scrolled to the top of the topic list.

Thanks again to Shoreboy for finding this:

One of Minnesotaís greatest small college football players died on St. Patrickís Day. And if youíre now waiting for the ethnic connection, it will not be forthcoming.
Ole Gunderson was 100 percent Norwegian. And he admitted one reason he chose to attend St. Olaf was that he had the same first name as the school, named in the honor of Olaf II, the king and patron saint of Norway early in the 11th century.
Gunderson came from Clover Valley, an unincorporated township north of Duluth, and played eight-man football in high school. He enrolled at St. Olaf in the fall of 1968. Freshmen were not eligible for varsity competition.
Mike Schmiesing was the lead back that season in coach Tom Porterís wing-T and was drafted in the seventh round by Philadelphia. The Eagles had 19 choices (in 17 rounds) and Schmiesing was among 12 draftees who didnít make the team.
Gunderson ran 49 yards for a touchdown on his first carry in 1969 and Porter had his replacement for Schmiesing.
St. Olaf was near the end of a quarter-century spent in the Midwest Conference. The Oles had left the MIAC in 1950 and returned in 1975. Thus, the MIAC powers ó St. Johnís and Concordia, at that time ó were not on the schedule. The top of the Midwest was comparable to the rest of the MIAC back then.
Gunderson wasnít the biggest or the fastest of running backs, blessed instead with great balance and durability. Defenses came after Ole fiercely, and he would continue to go at opponents 30 times a game in Porterís run, then-run-again offense.
The stats on St. Olafís website have credited Gunderson with 608 carries for 3,899 yards. That makes him the Olesí all-time leading rusher, but his teammates from 1969 to í71 say heís being shortchanged ó that it actually was 639 carries for 4,060 yards, good for 70 touchdowns.
St. Olaf was 25-2 in Gundersonís three seasons. He spent training camp with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, was cut, came back to Minnesota and raised a family ó including Shane, an All-America baseball player for the Gophers.
Gunderson had been dealing with cancer and died at 68 at his home in Morristown, Minn.

Tyra Falk Peterson, sister to Diane Peterson Laiti passed away 19 July 2019. Let me know if you have trouble getting to the obit. I've been in touch with Tyra for the past few years and helped her confirm her parentage on her father's side with Ancestry DNA. She grew up to be an amazingly educated and accomplished woman.

It is with great sadness that I post this. Clifford Sundstrom, one of the last links to the history of French river and a 1947 grad of Clover Valley has passed away.

He was born in the house his father built on Greenwood road and lived there the vast majority of his life. He was a long time member of French River Lutheran and was, according to him, related to more people in the area then any one else.

He was my Dad's best friend since before WWII and my godfather.

The picture shows him at my parents, sitting in his mothers rocking chair that my Dad rebuilt.

Gods speed Clifford. You will be missed by many.

I am posting this with a heavy heart. Last evening my Mother. Joan Bates passed away at Diamond Willows Lakeside. Mom had Alzheimers. During this time of Covid-19 a service will be held at a later date once the stay at home order is lifted. Mom along with my Dad operated the Wonderland Resort for over 30 years. My Mom served on the Duluth Township Zoning board as secretary.

John was riding that 10 speed to the US Steel plant. I believe he was shoveling coal into the furnace. He was covered by the coal dust. John would stop by the store and buy several quarts of beer for the ride home.

I know John also got picked up speeding on that bide on London road. All that hard work, John was in very good shape.

Dave Driscoll passed away. Dave was a classmate of mine. Dave hung out with Russ Griffin and Randy Alseth. Prayers go out to the Driscoll family. In the sixth grade I got Dave in trouble with Mrs. Lindquist in music. We were singing a song and I decided to do the echo effect while singing. Mrs. Lindquist thought it was Dave since our singing voices must of been the same. Dave kept saying he didn't do to. I wasn't thrown under the bus because all those near me had to know who was doing this. Later in life while talking with Norma and Bill who I saw often at the mall, I told her my story. We had a nice laugh.

Dave rest in peace.

Mrs. Marie Brown a long time teacher at North Shore passed away at 102. I remember when her son Jim died in a car accident on the north shore coming home from work. Jim had a yellow mustang fastback. I didn't have her for a teacher. She was liked by many students at North Shore.

Thanks for the update Max. Having never gone to North Shore Elementary I never got to know Mrs. Brown. Looks like she lived a long and fruitful life. What I do remember even more than her son Jim is that yellow Mustang. Was at Johnson's drive in one night and watched as Jim pulled the front wheels off the ground in the first 3 gears. Not sure if that car led to Jim's untimely death but it was a fast car and he did seem to like to drive fast.

Did not know the part about Chuck Lundin. Knew Chuck years ago. He was a nice guy. Lived on Greenwood road. Sounds like he stepped up when needed. Good for him and his family.

I remembered that they said that Jim fell asleep while driving home after his shift at work. Hi car rolled over and back then nobody wore seat belts plus it only would had been a lap belt.

Chuck Linden lived near Mrs. Brown and he was a really nice guy. He would stop in the store and talk with my Dad. I believed he lived on the Mace road.

I'd heard that Jim died while in the service. He was overseas and on a blackout maneuver driving a big truck when he went off the sharp turn. He was good friends with Ed Nynas. Jim had a little black car at the time that I knew him. I don't recall what kind.

Sad to see all the old names of the area pass away. Some how I missed the obit about Fred. Not sure what went on there.

Thanks Max for keeping us up to date. Hope the weird times have found you healthy.

Is that the Hatfield that owned the store on McQuade? I assume it is.

Ms. Gazett was a teacher at Clover Valley for several years. One could say many of her students were kinda hard on her. May she rest in peace.

Barbara Gazett died in December 2020 age 87 at Keystone Bluffs, the place she had lived for a number of years after moving from her home in Lakeside. After Clover Valley closed, she continued teaching in the county school system until she retired. In retirement she loved to travel, in the US as well as abroad. She still had a current passport when she passed away. Barb loved to work on her family histories, spending countless hours constructing family trees not only of her parents families but her grandparents families back many generations.
She was predeceased by her parents and her brother Daniel, she is survived by her cousins from WI and her more extended family.
Barbara's graveside service was attended by 2 cousins, 2 childhood playmates, one college friend with whom she maintained a friendship, one fellow teacher from Clover Valley, and one student from her teaching career.
